WHAT IT DOES

Sturgis Iron & Metal’s Mega-Shredder shreds and recycles cars, trucks, buses and other materials into scraps the size of softballs that can be easily transported by rail or by truck.

The scrap metal and other scrap materials shredded by the Mega Shredder are carefully sorted into ferrous, nonferrous and other materials and prepared for shipment to customers needing recycled scrap metals for use in manufacturing or other uses.

Normal operation of Sturgis Iron’s giant shredder is far quieter than you might imagine. Recent tests conducted by the City of Elkhart showed conclusively that the average sound levels associated with the normal operation of Sturgis Iron’s Mega-Shredder and recycling facility are virtually identical, and most of the time, even quieter than the location of the Elkhart Public Library!

According to the City of Elkhart’s report, one thousand and fifty-three readings were taken during seven business days in late February and early March of 2007. During that period, only one of the more than one thousand readings exceeded the stated city ordinance maximum limit of 83 decibels, and that specific incident resulted from a loud train coupling noise emanating from nearby railroad tracks! (Our Elkhart recycling facility is located directly adjacent to the second-largest rail switching yard in North America.)

The report also confirmed that in EVERY circumstance, readings in the 70 to 80 decibel range resulted from random noise spikes attributable to heavy vehicular traffic, loud neighborhood voices, boom boxes, dogs barking, or car muffler noises. The report noted that there were more than 70 such incidents, and none of them were associated with the operation of the shredder.

The report goes on to conclude “It is clear that ambient noise levels range from 50 decibels to 66 decibels in the test area. These average readings test almost identically to the baseline location at the corner of High and Second Streets (library) in downtown Elkhart at approximately the same time on the same day.”
